Re: My new pair of scorps ...
Is it normal to see the nerve chord thingy in non gravid scorps? I am a bit confused now.
They are very pretty, Luke!

Re: My new pair of scorps ...
If you got them from Martin Goss then they won't be gravid as they are not fully grown yet, should get upto about 4 1/2 inch

Re: My new pair of scorps ...
i have a male of this species too, from the Goss bros. very nice scorp...i love the patterns of granulations on the pedipalps!
i found mine stilted when kept very warm, so i keep it unheated (though my room is in the upper 20's these days) and up on my top shelf. he's eating so i think i've found the right spot for him.
oh Steph, i think with healthy fat scorps it's fairly usual to see that, the intersegmental membrane is quite transparent...hence why you can see the babies
hmm just looking at the pics...is it just the angle, or is the top one possibly the male and the bottom one the female? just that the tail looks longer on the top one...dunno though if you can tell that easily with young ones of this species. my male has an obviously long thin tail, especially the last segment.

Yes, they were from Martin, I didnt think the female could be gravid either, I mainly keep t's so these are new to me really although i do have emps and i've kept a couple diff species in the past. I didnt think they got that big !

Re: My new pair of scorps ...
no probs...it's just what i observed i *think* in the wild they spend their hot days chilling under ground and come up at night when it's ALOT cooler. so that would explain why he didn't like the heat here.
i'm quite a noob with scorpions myself, really...took me ages to work them out at all for some reason
Lisa will know more of course

Re: My new pair of scorps ...
if you see the nerve cord (or 'heart') of a juvi scorpion it means they are getting pretty close to molting
These can take forever and a day before they moult.
my various smeringurus sp are kept close to 30oC during the day, where they stay hidden in their burrows but occasionally come close to the entrance to get some heat for the night time.
Then about an hour after lights out they come out on walkabout.
After speaking with a friend of mine who is a bit of a scorpion bible! He told me that if your Smeringurus has been in premolt for about 6 months. poor a small amount of water into one corner just before 'lights out' or early evening. not too much it will want to evaporate off reasonably quickly the next day. They are pretty much intolerant to water but obviously it is difficult to get a humidity gradient in your home set up to match their burrow in the wild. They will simply come out and when they find it. they will sit in the damp patch. This can help them to moult. not always so dont be too worried if it doesn't shed. just try again in another 4 weeks.
The only way to re-create light humidity in a burrow would be to have a 2-3ft deep tank with a pipe going to the bottom in which to poor water under the deep substrate. creating a mild humidity gradient below the surface. but it would weight a ton!!! And you would hardly see ya scorpion lol!
Good luck with these, I have a wee lil' lad... might have to get a girly though
Do not do this more than once a month or you risk your scorpion getting mycosis.

Re: My new pair of scorps ...
Its commenly thougt thats its the nerve cord thats runs down the back of the scorpion but by reading some more advanced scorpion anatomy shows that it whould be the heart thats visable
