Tiny - coz it will be huge
Bum- coz of red rump
Heather - coz of wonky leg (heather McCartney)

Pugwash- Coz it is a seemani ( seaman )
Vegas - coz in the pic the Emilia looks short fat and hairy like Johnny Vegas
Petal - coz its a rosea (rose)
eeek - coz it is a surprse from Peter and that is a surprised noise

ooooooooo and when i get the scorps they are gunna be

At the moment they do, but I'm sure eventually I will have too many Smile

G. rosea is Octavia because she had 8 legs (although she now only has 7!)
B. boehmei is Isabella to carry on the Shakespearian/Mexican theme
GBB is Webster, because it likes to make webs lol
A. avicularia is Boots because it has little pink feet
A. geniculata is Genie (from geniculata)
A. metallica is Sparky (metal = sparks)
G. aureostriata is Sylvi after the person who gave it to me
E. campestratus is Digger because it makes massive burrows
B. smithi I am getting Saturday is already called Myrtle
H. lividum coming Thursday - no name yet but it'll probably be a rude name if it gives me trouble when I'm tubbing it up.

My mantids don't have names at the moment.

My first spider was named Ophira, she's an aureostriata and Ophira is the greek word for gold Smile But i never call her it or even label her tank with it.

I do however have a B. smithi called Delia....... Rolling Eyes

I've got so many that naming them all would take me a weekend and a baby names book! Laughing
I only have three named which are:

Brachypelma albopilosum - Chris
She was one of my first spiders from Shaz at Bug Nation and she was already called Chris before I got her so the name stuck. I thought I would have to change the name to something feminine, but Chris is a females name too.

Brachypelma verdezi - Grey
Brachypelma smithi - Adele

I don't really have name labels on their tanks; I have come up with a code convention so I can tell the species and their number. E.g. My B. smithi are "BSM1, BSM2 etc...". I keep an electronic record of their scientific name, common name, date of purchase, price, enclosure type, size, moult records, gender, mating notes and the last time they ate.

I've names for some of my inverts .
P.Cambridgei are called Baron & Earl
P.Pulcher are Debbie & Harry (typically , Debbie looks male and Harry looks Female)
P.Irminia is Shadow (looking for one to call silhouette)
P.Murinus is Archibald (he escaped for 6 days , so looked at cast list for 'The Great Escape')
My 3 C.Crawshayi are named after the 3 furies of Greek mythology 'Alecto' , 'Magaera' and Tisiphon'
and finally my centipede (a Scolopendra sp) Lord Percy Percy , because 'he's' not timid , nice or a ponce (Blackadder II). lol!

Post by Lisa Baines 2009-03-22, 16:09

oh my gosh we have soooo many naming them would be a nightmare.

however some have nic names

the g.rosea is rosie
the h.lividums are called big fracktal and little fractal
p.fufilata is fuffles
cyriopagopus schoedti is called snagglepus, simply because it took me ages to get my tongue around it's name!

but none of the scorpions have names... such as the spinifers are too alike to ID without having a really good look.
